Why Most DJs Can’t Just Post a Price Online (And Why You Should Be Glad They Don’t)
One of the most common questions we get is: “How much does it cost?” It’s a fair question — and we wish we could just drop a number here and call it done. But here’s the honest truth: any DJ who posts a flat rate on their website is either guessing or cutting corners. Neither one is good for you.
Here’s why.
Every single event is its own thing. The venue is different. The hours are different. The needs are different. The memories you’re trying to create are completely different. A DJ quoting the same price for a three-hour backyard birthday party and a seven-hour wedding reception with a ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception isn’t being transparent — they’re being lazy. Someone’s getting overcharged, and someone’s getting underserved.
Think about everything that actually goes into a DJ booking. The venue alone changes the entire equation. A small indoor space and a sprawling outdoor venue with no built-in sound system are two completely different setups — different equipment, different load-in time, different logistics. Some venues have their own AV infrastructure. Others need everything brought in from scratch. That affects cost.
Then there’s time. A four-hour event and an eight-hour event are not the same job. There’s setup before anyone arrives, breakdown after everyone leaves, and hours of preparation that happen long before the first song plays — building your playlist, confirming your timeline, learning the names for introductions, coordinating with your venue and vendors.
And your specific needs matter too. Do you need a wireless microphone for toasts? Ceremony music in a separate location from the reception? Uplighting or special effects? A DJ who can also serve as MC and keep the program moving? All of that takes skill, equipment, and time — and it should be reflected in what you pay.

Where We Work
Mystik Music is based out of Buckley, WA and proudly serves the greater Puget Sound region — from Olympia and Thurston County in the south, through the Tacoma area and all of Pierce County, up through King County and Greater Seattle. If your event is somewhere on the western side of Washington state, there’s a good chance we can be there.
For events within 60 miles of Buckley, there’s no travel charge. For anything beyond that radius, a travel fee applies to cover the time and logistics of getting there properly. We’ll always be upfront about that when we put your quote together — no surprises on the invoice, ever.
